November has been one of the year’s quietest months in terms of major international tournaments, with only 1,610 GSN points awarded, but four sports that were recently added to the GSN statistics did put points on the board.

The monthly table for the Global Cup, the ranking of the world’s best sporting nations, was topped by Spain, which won the Stand-up Paddling World Championship (ahead of Japan and France), followed by Italy, whose points tally was mostly drawn from Tennis (a sport that Italy has won outright in 2024 for the first time, ahead of the USA and Spain), and the USA.

It was the second time this year that Spain topped the monthly Global Cup table, having done so in July.

The full November monthly ranking is below.

Besides Stand-up Paddling, the other three recently introduced sports awarding points in November were Fistball (first tracked by GSN in 2019), Padel and Parkour (both tracked for the first time this year, like Stand-up Paddling).

Brazil took the honours in the Fistball World Championship, ahead of Germany and Switzerland, topping a table with countries from four continents (including New Zealand and Namibia).

Argentina and Spain were joint first in the Padel World Championships (the former winning the men’s title, the latter the women’s), with Portugal in third place.

Sweden won the Parkour World Championships ahead of Japan and the Netherlands thanks to a more complete all-round performance, while the Freestyle event was won by Japan, and Mexico won the Speed event.

Follow GSN also on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) and keep up with the latest in the quest for the world’s best sporting nation!

Greatest Sporting Nation is a ranking of countries based on their performance in top-level international tournaments in sports in which there is genuine global competition. Countries (national teams and/or individual athletes) score Qualifying Points by finishing in the top eight places in Qualifying Events.

These Qualifying Points are then weighted to produce GSN Points, based on a formula that takes into account individual vs team sports, the sport’s participation (number of countries) and the frequency (annual/biennial/quadrennial) of the tournaments.

The Country scoring the most Points in a calendar year wins the Global Cup for that year. The country that scores the most points relative to its population wins the Per Capita Cup. For a more detailed explanation, please refer to the ‘How It Works’ section on the site
