The Sports Analytics Innovation Summit 2014 in London

We are passionate about sports statistics at GSN, so we’re excited about attending the Sports Analytics Innovation Summit on March 26th – 27th 2014 in London, organized by the Innovation Enterprise.

The fact that GSN is one of the summit’s media partners is another reason for being keen on it. But it’s sports stats that we care about, as do our readers, and some of the items on the summit’s agenda look particularly appetizing.

Personally, I’m looking forward in particular to Peter Vint (Senior Director of Research at USOC, the US Olympic Committee) and his talk on the application of ranking methodologies to evaluate competitiveness.

GSN was born out of our obsession for ranking the performance of sporting nations. Coming to grips with new, different methodologies is essential to our continuous quest for more accurate and significant performance measurements.

I’m also fascinated by how important the aggregation and evaluation of individual athletes’ performance data is (I won’t miss Aspire Academy Marco Cardinale’s talk on the application of analytics in sports).
As a former competition athlete (Alpine Skiing was/is my thing…) with a keen eye for data, I only wish that, even if my racing days were not so long in the past, I had at my disposal half of the stats available today to better understand my performance.

Finally, as a Londoner passionate about football, and even though I’m not of that particular team’s persuasion, I do look forward to enjoying the summit’s venue, the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal, currently top of the English Premiership table.

See you at the summit!
