Long Jump champions and records

Bob Beamon of the USA

The long jump is notable for two of the longest-standing world records in Athletics. In 1935, Jesse Owens of the USA set a long jump world record that was not broken until 1960 by Ralph Boston (USA). Later, Bob Beamon (guess what? From the USA) jumped 8.90 meters at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, a jump not exceeded for 23 years. On August 30, 1991, Mike Powell of the United States, in a famous show down against Carl Lewis, leapt 8.95 m at the World Championships in Tokyo, setting the current men's world record.

The USA’s domination of the sport is confirmed by the number of athletes they place in the top-ten list of all time: 6 American jumpers make the cut in the men’s ranking, alongside one athlete each rom the former Soviet Union, Panama, Cuba and Germany.
The current world record for women has a long history too, as it’s held by Galina Chistyakova of the former Soviet Union who leapt 7.52 m on home turf in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in 1988.
As with other sports, the ladies top-ten list is East Europe-dominated: it features 3 athletes from the former Soviet Union, 2 from Russia and one each from the Ukraine, the former East Germany and Romania. The rest of the field is made up of 2 USA ladies.
