France Wins Month of July After Football World Cup Triumph
France won the July monthly ranking in the Global Cup, topping the table of the world’s best sporting nations thanks chiefly to its men’s team’s victory in the FIFA Football World Cup 2018, held in Russia.
Triumph in football’s premier international tournament was worth 800 GSN points for Les Bleus, but France added more, notably coming second in the men’s Volleyball Nations League (worth a hefty 192 points) and picking up a useful 111 points at the Fencing World Championships, in which it finished fifth.
Overall Global Cup leader USA came second behind France in the July monthly ranking, on the back of a strong performance in Volleyball (victory in the women’s World Grand Prix and third place in the men’s Nations League), Golf, Lacrosse and Fencing – the USA finished third behind Italy and South Korea in the Fencing World Championships.
The USA, Italy and South Korea were the only countries in the monthly top ten not to have featured prominently in the Football World Cup, as was the case for Great Britain, third in the month after England’s fourth place in Russia and strong performances in the Lacrosse World Championships and the Rugby Sevens World Cup, Croatia (Football World Cup runner-up), Russia, Belgium, Brazil and Sweden.
