2013: the major tournaments on the planet

 The new year is barely under way and sport has already taken off at breakneck speed with the Australian Tennis Open,

the first of the year’s Grand Slam tournaments, and many other hot events.

To prepare our readers for another great year of sport, here is a very small sample of the main tournaments in the most popular sports taking place on our planet in 2013.
Athletics: it’s a non Olympic year but get ready for the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Moscow (ending August 18th): the USA vs Russia vs GBR vs Jamaica all over again?
Basketball: a yearful of Continental tournaments with the championships for Africa (Afrobasket Hommes), the Americas and the Men (ending Sept. 22nd in Slovenia) and Women (ending June 30th in France) European championships
Football: while the world competes to reach the Brazil 2014 World Cup Finals, we have juicy hors d’oeuvres with the African Cup of Nations (Men) ending in South Africa on February 10th, the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil (ending June 30th) and the Women European Championships in Sweden (ending July 28th)
Swimming: the FINA World Aquatics Championships will have the whole world by the poolside in Barcelona until August 4th
Road Cycling: scenic Florence in Italy will host the UCI Road Cycling World Championships on September 29th
Volleyball: the two big ones are the FIVB World League for the men (ending July 21st) and the World Grand Prix for the Ladies (ending on September 21st).
Tennis: the dates of the Men’s finals to put in your diary are
o   January 27th in Melbourne (Australia) for the Australian Open
o   June 9th at the Roland Garros (Paris) for the French Open
o   July 7th at Wimbledon (Great Britain)…just Wimbledon, London, UK
o   September 9th in Flushing Meadows (NY, USA) for the US Open

o   Boston Marathon, April 15th
o   Virgin London Marathon, April 21st
o   BMW Berlin Marathon, September 29th
o   Chicago Marathon, October 13th
o   New York Marathon ???
