Australia win Rugby League WC, GBR closer to 3rd place in Global Cup
Congratulations to Australia, recent winners of the Rugby League World Cup after defeating England in the final in Brisbane.
The victory means Australia clinch first place in GSN’s Rugby League Global Cup, their second title in a row after the 2013 triumph over New Zealand, and the second GSN sport they won in 2017, after Track Cycling. It also means Australia climb one place, into 10th, in the overall Global Cup ranking.
England's runners-up spot earned Great Britain 80 very useful points for the overall Global Cup standings, cutting their deficit vs France in third place to 287 points.
The race for second and third place, behind Global Cup winners-to-be USA, is very tight: there are only 61 points between Russia (second) and France (third), while Great Britain, Italy, China and Germany all have a chance to aim for at least third place.
The next two tournaments on the agenda, the Weightlifting World Championships (ended 5th December) and the Handball Women’s World championships (ending 17th December) will both feature most of the main contenders, so stay tuned to GSN for more news!
Please note that, at the time of publication, the Rugby League World Cup results weren’t yet reflected on the GSN tables.
