The USA and Kenya maintain their dominant position of 2008, while Russia, Australia and Cuba have slipped somewhat. On the rise, thanks to excellent results in the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, are Jamaica, Ethiopia, Germany and Poland, while Great Britain holds onto its 6th place.

Major Athletics Competitions

Besides the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships, top level outdoor Athletics competition centres around the yearly World Athletics Tour, run by the International Association of Athletics Federations, IAAF.  There is also a rich season of indoor meetings worldwide in late autumn and winter.
The WAT is a series of worldwide meetings where athletes accumulate points according to their placements in each event (eg 100m, high jump, discus etc). The top ranking athletes in each event at the end pf the season then take part in the World Athletics Final, a single meeting which awards the yearly top prizes.
WAT meetings can be of different category, a sort of tiered system as in the Tennis Masters Series, according to their status and entrance requirements: from the Golden League series (6 meetings in Berlin, Oslo, Rome, Paris, Zurich, Bruxelles) which awards its own millionaire prizes, to Super Grand Prix and Grand Prix meetings, to the so-called Area Permit Meetings. For the full calendar see www.iaaf.org/competitions/wat/index.html.
Outside of the WAT, Road Racing and Cross-Country running have their own series.
The former covers 12 months of the year with 55 different events, featuring 10k and 20k runs, half and full marathons (see calendar at http://www.iaaf.org/competitions/roadraces/index.html)
For Cross-Country , there is an annual World Cross Country Championship as well as numerous races throughout the world.

Forthcoming events

The main event for 2009 Athletics competitions  is undoubtedly the 12th edition of the World Championships in Athletics  to be held in Berlin, Germany, from  the 15th to the 23rd of August. The home of the championships will be the Berlin Olympic Stadium, with a seating capacity of over 74.000, in the city district of Charlottenburg.
For the first time in the history of the IAAF World Championship, all events, including the Marathon and Race Walking events, will take place in the city centre.

Other notables events in the year will be
  • The 6th IAAF World Youth Championships, from 8th to 12th of July in South Tirol, Italy
  • The IAAF-VTB Bank World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 12th to 13th September.
Countdown to Berlin 2009
ONE RECORD A WEEK.

The men’s 100m world record. The current world record stands at 9,69’’ and was run on August 16th, 2008, at the Beijing Olympics 100m gold medal final by Usain Bolt of Jamaica. He beat his own record of 9,72’’, established in New York City on May 31st of the same year.
The record-setting final took place at the National Stadium, the Olympics home ground, at 22.30 of August 16th, a Saturday. The two records to beat were Bolt’s world record and the Canadian Donovan Bailey’s Olympic record, standing at 9,84’’, set in 1996 at the Atlanta (USA) centenary Olympics and still the 6th fastes time ever.
Weather conditions were fine: a little warm (28°) but dry (39% humidity) with negligible tail wind. Bolt was the second slowest off the blocks but staged an astonishing acceleration and progression to win by a 0,20’’ margin over Richard Thompson of Trinidad&Tobago and Walter Dix of the USA.
