Germany top Winter Sports ranking after February

Laura Dahlmeier (Germany) celebrates one of her 5 golds at the Biathlon Worlds

Germany, currently the overall Global Cup leaders ahead of France and Norway, lead the pack half-way into the Winter Sports season – if this sounds a touch odd it is because the last titles for the snow-and-ice sports are awarded in May, with the Ice Hockey World Championships.

There are still just under 4000 Winter Sports points to be won, including the entire Alpine Skiing World Cup bounty and those from the Cross Country Skiing World Championships, but Germany have made a flying start and have carved a 167 points lead over Austria in the Winter Sports table (see below).

While it was no surprise that Germany won the Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton World Championships this year, a repeat of last year’s performances, their winning run in the high-scoring Biathlon World Championships is worthy of mention.
It is the second year running that Norway, which dominated the sport clinching the title in 2013, 2014 and 2015, does not hit bullseye in Biathlon, having lost to France last year, when Germany, very much the up-and-coming force, was third.
In fact Norway was only fourth in the 2017 Biathlon ranking, scoring zero points with their ladies, while Germany  won in the Ladies (courtesy also of 5 gold medals by Laura Dahlmeier) and in the Mixed relay, and were third in the men.
In Speedskating, the Netherlands won the overall title again, as they have done since GSN records began, while Austria leads the provisional ranking for Alpine Skiing, which reflects the St. Moritz World Championships (see below).

There are still plenty of points to battle for and the Winter Sports race is far from over, so follow it on GSN in the next few months!
