USA top nation in July, ahead of Great Britain, Russia

The USA topped the July monthly ranking in the Global Cup by scoring a record total of 1,858 points, more points in 30 days than for example those scored by two top-10 countries like the Netherlands or Canada in the whole of 2018.

July was a hotly contested sporting month, with 12,482 GSN points awarded, shared out between as many as 73 different countries, from Australia to Zimbabwe, from China (population 1,386,990,000) to Luxembourg (population 590,667, scoring 5 points in the women’s Epee at the Fencing World Championships).

The month’s main tournaments were, among others, the Swimming World Championships (including the Open Waters World Championships), worth 4,602 points (36.9% of the monthly total), the women’s Football World Cup (worth 13.0% of the monthly total), the women’s Volleyball World Grand Prix, the Fencing World Championships, the Water Polo World Championships, not to mention Wimbledon for Tennis and a spate of major Golf tournaments.

The USA won the monthly ranking by a handsome margin, beating Great Britain, Russia, Italy and Australia, themselves separated by a mere 98 points. The mighty Stars and Stripes won the first three tournaments listed above, in Swimming, Football and Volleyball, altogether worth 1,396 points for them, and scored big in eight other sports, including Diving and Beach Volleyball.

While the stand-out result, in terms of global resonance, was no doubt the US Ladies’ triumph in the FIFA Football World Cup, it’s worth noting how the USA scored GSN points (i.e. had an athlete in the top 8 of any single event) in 59 different instances in the Swimming, Open Water and Synchronised Swimming World Championships.

In the face of such predominance, even exceptional performances by Great Britain, which bagged 140 points by winning the Cricket World Cup and finishing sixth in the Swimming World Championships, and by Italy, fourth in the latter tournament, winner of the men’s Water Polo World Cup and second behind Russia in the Fencing World Championships, weren’t enough to tot up even half of the USA’s monthly points total.

The full Global Cup ranking for the month of July 2019 is set out below. Please note that, at the time of publication, the July results weren’t yet reflected in the tables on the GSN site.
