The USA won the month of October in the 2017 Global Cup, the annual ranking of the world's best sporting nations.
They scored 623 points after coming second at the Archery World Championships, fourth at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, fourth at the Shooting World Cup Finals and fourth at the Rowing World Championships. They also scored points in Tennis (the WTA Tour Finals) and at the Canoe / Kayak Slalom World Championships and the Chicago Marathon.

Italy came second with 550 points after winning the Rowing World Championships, and coming second in the Shooting World Cup Finals and fifth in the Archery World Championships.
China finished third with 488 points after scoring points across five sports, including winning the Shooting World Cup Finals and coming joint first in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

The month’s top 10 saw Great Britain finish in fourth place (after coming 2nd in the Rowing World Championships, 6th in the Canoe / Kayak Slalom World Championships and 8th in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships), followed by Germany (3rd in the Archery World Championships and 3rd in the Canoe / Kayak Slalom World Championships), France (2nd in the Canoe / Kayak Slalom World Championships and 4th in the Archery World Championships), New Zealand (3rd in the Rowing World Championships), South Korea (winners of the Archery World Championships), Australia  and Russia (the latter were joint first in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships).

While October’s results consolidated the USA’s lead at the top of the year-to-date Global Cup rankings, they also represent a crucial step forward for France, which is locked in a titanic struggle with Russia for second place. With France scoring 133 more points than Russia in October, it has now moved to within 86 points of Russia in second place in the year-to-date rankings. With only two months to go to the final year-end rankings, this is a battle that promises to go to the wire!
