Kenya top nation in April, Norway still leads Global Cup

Kenya was the best sporting nation in the month of April, a relatively lean month results-wise, with over 70% of the GSN points on offer shared between the Boston Marathon, the Short Track World Championships and the women’s Cricket World Cup.

Kenya won the Boston Marathon emphatically, followed by Ethiopia and Tanzania, and this was enough for the African country to top April’s monthly Global Cup table (please see below) ahead of Canada and South Korea. The latter two, in reverse order, dominated the Short Track World Championships, sharing over 50% of the points between themselves. Thanks to this result, Canada was able to climb ahead of Switzerland in third place in the Global Cup year-to-date ranking.

Norway still leads the Global Cup on a year-to-date basis, although the USA has narrowed the gap from over 200 points in March to just over 100 at the end of April, notably thanks to 111 points won at this year’s Golf Masters tournament. Norway’s lead is likely to be further eroded in the coming months, as the sporting calendar moves away from Snow & Ice sports, in which the Norwegians have once again ruled the roost this year after winning the Beijing Winter Games, and on to summer sports.

Greatest Sporting Nation is a ranking of countries based on their performance in top-level international tournaments in sports in which there is genuine global competition. Countries (national teams and/or individual athletes) score Qualifying Points by finishing in the top eight places in Qualifying Events.

These Qualifying Points are then weighted to produce GSN Points, based on a formula that takes into account individual vs team sports, the sport’s participation (number of countries) and the frequency (annual/biennial/quadrennial) of the tournaments.

The Country scoring the most Points in a calendar year wins the Global Cup for that year. The country that scores the most points relative to its population wins the Per Capita Cup. For a more detailed explanation, please refer to the ‘How It Works’ section on the site.
