USA wins month of April ahead of China, Kenya

Tiger Woods wins the 2019 Golf Masters at Augusta, his fifth win in the tournament and the first major he won since 2008

The USA finished top of the April monthly table in the Global Cup, the ranking of the world’s best sporting nations.

In April, the USA won the women’s Ice Hockey World Championship, scored 156 points in Golf, thanks also to Tiger Woods’s historic win at the Augusta Masters (and to US golfers taking the top 4 places), and bagged 82 points in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup, finishing the month with a slim, 52-point margin over China.

The USA’s win in the year’s penultimate major Snow & Ice tournament – only the men’s Ice Hockey World Championship remains, scheduled in May – means they are now fourth in the relevant sport group table, which is still firmly headed by Norway.

All of China’s points in April came from two sports, Freestyle Skiing and Table Tennis. China won the latter’s 2019 World Championships with a 51.3% share of the points, followed by Japan and South Korea for an all-Asian podium.

Third-placed Kenya had a mammoth month in Marathon, taking top spot in the men’s and women’s London Marathon and in the men’s Boston Marathon, and also bagging another 9 (nine!) top-eight finishes in the two events.
