USA triumph in Aquatics World Championships, lead Global Cup

Simone Manuel, USA, winner of the women's 100m Freestyle at the Swimming World Championships

July is usually one of the sporting year’s biggest months, and 2017 was no exception. The Global Cup, the ranking of the world’s best sporting nations, awarded a huge 9279 points in July, 31.8% of all the GSN points awarded so far this year.

And when the big prizes are out for the taking, the big players come out in force: the USA have dominated the month of July, winning 15.5% of the points on offer, and carving an impressive lead in the Global Cup ahead of the other world sporting giant, Russia, which gained another position in the table after a shaky start to the year.

In July, the USA have actually picked up nearly half of their overall points this year (1436 points out of 3188), winning 716 points at the FINA Aquatics World Championships, bagging 200 points from winning the Women’s Lacrosse World Championships, another 150 points from the US men’s fourth place in the Volleyball World League and 130 points from Golf, including victories in the British Open with Jordan Spieth and in the ladies’ LPGA Championship with Danielle Kang.

Russia didn’t have as wide an array of top-notch results, but still managed to finish second in the Fencing World Championships behind Italy, won 100 points at the Orienteering World Championships (finishing third behind Sweden and Switzerland), and they earned a creditable 336 points at the Aquatics worlds, including victory in Synchronised Swimming, ahead of Japan and Italy.

Behind the two sporting behemoths, France, Canada and Italy all rose one place in the Global Cup table, to the detriment of Norway, while Great Britain leaped an impressive six positions into seventh place, helped by strong performances in the water (see below for the full Aquatics table), and by their ladies in Cricket (winners of the World Cup) and Lacrosse (third in the World Championships).

Aquatic sports (which include pool Swimming, Open Water Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Diving and Water Polo) were worth a whopping 4251 points in July, 45.8% of the monthly total. Including the Water Polo World League, which was held in June, the final ranking of this major sport group saw the USA win handsomely, ahead of Russia and China. Great Britain gave these sporting giants a swim for their money in the men’s ranking, in which Team GB came third, while Italy, fourth overall ahead of Great Britain, showed great consistency across the gender rankings: they were fifth in the men, sixth in the women and second in the mixed-gender events.
