USA extends Global Cup lead, France, China, Japan climb table in September
The USA won the monthly ranking of the Global Cup in September, yet another record-breaking sporting month ( 15,710 GSN points awarded, a new high, and a staggering 96 countries scoring points), and made a decisive dash towards final victory in the 2019 Global Cup, the ranking of the world’s best sporting nations.
By picking up 1,666 points in September (more than double the points of second-placed Russia, the full table is below) the USA stretched its lead at the top of the Global Cup ranking, where it now has an even 10% share of the points awarded.
In a month filled to the brim with major tournaments (GSN’s data trackers and algorithm gurus must take a well-deserved bow for all their hard work), the USA dominated the Athletics Diamond League, its biggest point earner in the month, scoring 1,115 points for a 24.6% share in the tournament - Kenya was second with ‘only’ 9.0% . To this, the USA added a runner-up spot in the Free Wrestling World Championships, a third place in the Road Cycling World Championships and a seventh in the Men’s Basketball World Cup, alongside a string of other top results.
Russia is now comfortably second in the year-to-date Global Cup table, after finishing second in September, on the strength of, among others, winning both the Free Wrestling and Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships and coming fifth in the Judo World Championships.
Behind the two sporting super-powers, the race for the Global Cup’s other top places is now very tight, with only 508 points between third place (France) and eighth place (Italy), and only three sporting months left in the year. France came third in the September monthly ranking and gained two positions in the year-to-date table, helped by finishing second in the Judo World Championships behind Japan, and third in the Men’s Basketball World Cup, behind the relatively surprising winner Spain and runner-up Argentina.
China too had a successful September, climbing two places in the year-to-date table after dominating the Weightlifting World Championships with 20.9% of the points, ahead of North Korea with 9.6% and Colombia with 7.3%, and finishing fifth in the Free Wrestling World Championships.
The most dynamic country in the year-to-date top 10 table after September was however Japan, which climbed three places after winning the Judo World Championships and finishing third and fourth respectively in the Free Wrestling and Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships.
Finally, a mention for the 15 mighty minnows which scored their first GSN points of the year during this record-breaking month of September, making the sporting world more diverse and exciting through their participation. In alphabetical order, welcome and well done to Albania, Armenia, Bahamas, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Syria and Turkmenistan.
