London 2012 Day 13: Jamaica treble in the 200m Men Sprint
Some had doubts that Usain Bolt could clinch a second Olympic double by winning gold in the London 2012 Games 200m sprint, even after his apparently easy defeat of Yohan Blake in the 100m.
Even fewer would have bet on Jamaica hitting a historic treble in the 200m. Usain Bolt first, Yohan Blake second and Warren Weir third was the final result in London’s Olympic Stadium.
Not only a first for Jamaican sprinters but a first in Olympic history. No other country had ever struck gold, silver and bronze in the Olympic 200m sprint save the USA.
The Americans did it six times between the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis and Athens 2004, and no other nation had ever matched them.
Bolt, Blake and Weir have achieved this fantastic treble in the wake of great Olympians such as Eddie Tolan (Los Angeles 1932) and Carl Lewis ( Los Angeles 1984). And they will want to write more history come the Rio 2016 Games.
