Germany tops January 2019 Global Cup ranking
The sporting year got off to a busy start in January, with the Handball men’s World Championships, the Luge World Championships
and the Australian Tennis Open among other tournaments.
European nations started strong: Germany ran away with the Luge World Championships - winning five gold medals and bagging 45.4% of the points – while Denmark, France and Norway finished respectively first, third and second in the Handball men’s World Championships.
France scored more useful points in Tennis and Skateboarding – it finished fourth in the Skateboarding World Championships behind Brazil, the USA and Japan – which means it managed to finish in third place, and 14 points ahead of fifth-placed USA, in 2019’s first monthly Global Cup ranking.
In recent years, France has consistently been the only country to pose any sort of threat to the USA’s world sporting dominance, finishing second in the Global Cup in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the January results seem to make it clear that it is keen to step up to the challenge once more.
Let the fight for the title of world’s best sporting nation begin again!
