August Global Cup: New entries in Top 20, USA stretch their lead
The sporting month of August has been dominated by the IAAF World Athletics Championships, which saw another comprehensive US victory but also the emergence of three new nations in the Global Cup’s top 20 ranking.
The USA’s Global Cup lead now stretches to 2.195 weighted points over Russia, Germany and a rising Great Britain. The Americans have handsomely won the Athletics World Championships overall, securing the title in the Men and being (surprisingly) beaten by a mere 35 points by tiny Jamaica in the Ladies.
The story however is about Kenya, Ethiopia and Jamaica, who entered the Global Cup’s top 20 in 10th, 17th and 15th place respectively, all on the strength of their excellent World Athletics Championships performances.
Kenya, now placed ahead of countries like Japan, Spain or Brazil in the Global Cup, came 4TH overall in the World Athletics Championships, ahead of major powerhouses like Great Britain, Germany and China. What’s remarkable about the African country’s performance is the consistency across genders: a sensational 2nd overall in the Men, and 4th in the Ladies.
Ethiopia was less consistent, but still finished 3rd in the Men and 6th in the Ladies in the World Athletics Championships.
Finally Jamaica: this sprinters’ paradise is now 15th in the Global Cup and has earned all its 1.269 points in the World Athletics Championships: 441 thanks to Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell in the Mens, and a whopping 441 in the Ladies ranking, which they won ahead of the USA and Russia. With many more Athletics events still to go in September, the outlook is good for the Caribbean nation.
